Weld Procedure Development in Green Bay
To qualify the procedure, TPS will work with a person within the company, or an agent of the company to weld a given material. Variables will be recorded such as travel speed, amperage, voltage, filler metal, base metal, gas, etc. In short, this piece proves that it “can be done.” The one person that welds it will then be certified to perform that weld (within the allowable limits of the AWS code). This coupon will be subjected to specific testing by TPS, based on the code. It often will include tensile pulls, bends, etc. The code will say how many samples to test in each method also. TPS will then create a document, called the PQR (Procedure Qualification Report). It will typically contain all the variables you used when you welded that first coupon, along with the reports from the destructive or non-destructive testing in Green Bay.
WPS (Weld Procedure Specification) in Green Bay
The WPS (Weld Procedure Specification) is then done. It will typically have a range of amperage you must be within, travel speed, tungsten, etc. A formal, written document describing the welding procedure will be provided directly to the welder or operator to ensure sound and quality production welds are made per code requirements. The purpose of the document is to guide welders to the acceptable procedures so that repeatable and trusted weld techniques are used.
Later, other welders must individually test to prove that “they” can do it. They may be given the WPS and let go, or they may just be verbally told what to do. The CWI (or other person authorized by code) will prepare the WPQ (Welder Performance Qualification). This is what your company will retain to show that you have that particular “certification.”
Weld Procedure Development and Welder Qualification
As a State of Wisconsin certified weld test facility that has an experienced in-house Certified Weld Inspector (CWI), we can assure that TPS will work side-by-side with you to help develop and qualify welding procedures that will satisfy the code requirements of any project. Our on-site lab can test for and consult on any procedural changes that need to be made for a qualification to be acceptable. Following successful qualification, TPS will construct a detailed report of certification so that your company and/or welder will be able to provide documentation of certification.
- The procedure must be qualified and documented (PQR)
- The WPS is created, based on the PQR
- Individual welders must then qualify and the WPQ is made
